Tanya Celina Ramirez
Graphic designer
I began working as a designer for my hometown
newspaper in August 2005. A part-timer without prior newspaper knowledge or experience, I was taught tricks of
the trade by the many seasoned editors and journalists at
the Laredo Morning Times newsroom. Soon enough,
I was tasked with designing front pages for news, sports, entertainment and lifestyle sections.
In 2007, LMT editor-at-large at the time,
Diana Fuentes, and I were awarded first place by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors for 1A team page design.
In 2008 and 2009 I was awarded honorable mention for feature page design. I left my position at LMT the summer of 2010.
In September 2010 I joined HKG Duty Free, a small,
but growing store with seven locations on the border to Mexico, including one in California and another in Arizona. As the store’s advertising manager and designer, I created the company’s promotional items, newspaper inserts, in-store signage,
magazine and newspaper ads.
I left the HKG team in the fall of 2011.
In November of 2011 I joined the Gannett Nashville Design Studio
in Nashville, Tennessee, as a Designer II. In my role there I
designed sports sections for a handful of newspapers
in Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. In April 2014 I was
awarded a Society of News Design Award of Excellence for pages that were part of The Clarion-Ledger’s staff portfolio.
In October 2017 the studio's parent company,
Gannett, dissolved the Nashville Design Studio.
In October 2017 I was re-hired by Gannett as
part of the Louisville Design Studio where I was the lead
sports designer for the Detroit Free Press.
In February 2019 all Gannett design studios merged
into one entity, creating the USA TODAY Network Design Studio. After the merger, I was assigned to the sports team where I designed and page edited several sports sections from across the country.
My main role was designing sports sections for the Detroit Free Press, Rochester Democrat and Poughkeepsie Journal.
In October 2020, I joined The Advocate newsroom
in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I started as deputy sports editor + designer for The Advocate in Baton Rouge, The Times-Picayune in
New Orleans and The Advocate in Acadiana.
In the summer of 2023 I was promoted to night editor +
lead designer. In my current role I design sports covers and
special sections, edit and post stories, and coordinate with editors and reporters to put together our daily sports sections.
In May 2024 I was awarded a Society of News Design Award of Excellence for sports cover design.

In my free time I like to read, doodle, and design things for
fun. I like to take on freelance gigs whenever possible.
During my time in Nashville I helped a couple of start-up restaurant/bars in the area with design work.
I created social items, menus and flyers and kept them
updated as they grew and changed their vision.
